CHAPTER TWENTY SEVEN
Smith finished his beer and got another one from the kitchen.
âHow was your first day back, then?â Whitton asked him.
âFrustrating,â Smith told her. âBut great at the same time. It was good to be back using my brain again.â
âI read about the two dead women,â Whitton said. âWhat happened to them? The press hasnât printed too many details.â
âWe havenât given them any details. All they know is two women were murdered. We havenât released their identities or how they were killed. They were both killed in such a terrible way.â
âThe identity of the woman in Leeds was published,â Whitton said. âAs was the way she was killed.â
âThat doesnât surprise me. Leeds CID seems to be lacking in lots of ways. I prefer to keep the info we hand to the press to the bare minimum until the families and friends of the victims have had chance to process whatâs happened. The first woman was found face-down on her bed with her spine severed in two places.â
âHer spine was severed?â Whitton said. âWhy would someone do that?â
âWe donât know,â Smith said. âAnd the second victim had a red hot poker rammed through her eye. Her cleaner found her in the kitchen with the poker sticking out of the back of her head.â
âDo you have any leads?â
âWe thought we did,â Smith took a long swig of beer. âBut it turned out to be a dead end. The first victimâs estranged husband lied to us repeatedly but in the end it turned out he had an alibi for the time of her murder. Heâs a surgeon â his wife is about to nail him in a divorce and he lied about his whereabouts at the time of the murder. We thought we had him when one of his business cards was found at the second murder scene.â
âWhat was it doing there?â Whitton asked.
âHe had no idea where it came from when we asked him. And itâs still a mystery.â
âA mystery youâll no doubt figure out very soon,â Whitton said.
âIâm not sure about this one.â
âHow many times have I heard that before?â
âSo, the surgeon was the only suspect?â Whitton said.
âThere is something else I want to look into,â Smith said. âThereâs a Death Metal band in town â two of the band members came to speak to me about the woman who was beheaded in Leeds. The drummer seemed convinced she was killed because of some of the lyrics to one of their songs.â
âThatâs a bit far-fetched isnât it?â
âThe dead woman was at one of their gigs right before she was killed. And she went back to her flat with the guitarist.â
âIs he a suspect?â
âThe police in Leeds seem to think so,â Smith said. âBut they only got wind of him because I contacted them. It seems to me brain cells are a bit thin on the ground in Leeds CID.â
âItâs still a bit far out there,â Whitton said. âA murderer killing women because of the words of a song.â
âThereâs more. Wishbone is pretty extreme, even as far as Death Metal outfits go.
