CHAPTER TWENTY SEVEN

Smith finished his beer and got another one from the kitchen.

“How was your first day back, then?” Whitton asked him.

“Frustrating,” Smith told her. “But great at the same time. It was good to be back using my brain again.”

“I read about the two dead women,” Whitton said. “What happened to them? The press hasn’t printed too many details.”

“We haven’t given them any details. All they know is two women were murdered. We haven’t released their identities or how they were killed. They were both killed in such a terrible way.”

“The identity of the woman in Leeds was published,” Whitton said. “As was the way she was killed.”

“That doesn’t surprise me. Leeds CID seems to be lacking in lots of ways. I prefer to keep the info we hand to the press to the bare minimum until the families and friends of the victims have had chance to process what’s happened. The first woman was found face-down on her bed with her spine severed in two places.”

“Her spine was severed?” Whitton said. “Why would someone do that?”

“We don’t know,” Smith said. “And the second victim had a red hot poker rammed through her eye. Her cleaner found her in the kitchen with the poker sticking out of the back of her head.”

“Do you have any leads?”

“We thought we did,” Smith took a long swig of beer. “But it turned out to be a dead end. The first victim’s estranged husband lied to us repeatedly but in the end it turned out he had an alibi for the time of her murder. He’s a surgeon – his wife is about to nail him in a divorce and he lied about his whereabouts at the time of the murder. We thought we had him when one of his business cards was found at the second murder scene.”

“What was it doing there?” Whitton asked.

“He had no idea where it came from when we asked him. And it’s still a mystery.”

“A mystery you’ll no doubt figure out very soon,” Whitton said.

“I’m not sure about this one.”

“How many times have I heard that before?”

“So, the surgeon was the only suspect?” Whitton said.

“There is something else I want to look into,” Smith said. “There’s a Death Metal band in town – two of the band members came to speak to me about the woman who was beheaded in Leeds. The drummer seemed convinced she was killed because of some of the lyrics to one of their songs.”

“That’s a bit far-fetched isn’t it?”

“The dead woman was at one of their gigs right before she was killed. And she went back to her flat with the guitarist.”

“Is he a suspect?”

“The police in Leeds seem to think so,” Smith said. “But they only got wind of him because I contacted them. It seems to me brain cells are a bit thin on the ground in Leeds CID.”

“It’s still a bit far out there,” Whitton said. “A murderer killing women because of the words of a song.”

“There’s more. Wishbone is pretty extreme, even as far as Death Metal outfits go.
